Last night I had the pleasure of trying something new. (If I had a dime every time I started a story like that). Last night I had the pleasure of hearing something new as I went to the Blue Note Jazz Club to see and hear Bob James and Earl Klugh, accompanied by Al Turner (on bass) and Ron Otis (on drums), kick-off the 30th anniversary celebration of “One on One” their Grammy winning collaboration. What I witnessed in the crowd and performance was beautiful visual and aural stimulation. You had a slightly diverse crowd all moving to the sounds of the band with the occasional “Woo” and sounds of fervent hand clapping shattering the silence of the audience. Even the deadest door-knob began to turn as each member of the band played pure pleasure. The highlights of the night include each member’s solo piece (gold medal to Al for his feverish playing as he lived up to “The Burner”) and the battle between Bob James and Ron Otis. For a first time, the performance was outstanding. The show runs twice a day (8pm and 10:30pm) until August 2nd.
