The NY Post reported that City Councilwoman Letitia James is trying to rename/co-name the Hoyt-Schermerhorn station in honor of Michael Jackson or hang a plaque. The background on MJ-Bad-Hoyt-Schermerhorn: Martin Scorsese directed the video for “Bad” in 1987 in this station (and Wesley Snipes was part of the video). The MTA- as of now – is refusing the request due to agency guidelines including the prohibition of hanging plaques in stations. One thing to note is that Ratner sealed a deal to buy naming rights to Atlantic Ave-Pacific Street station for the Nets’ arena.
I think the naming/co-naming thing is a little much. The MTA is strapped for cash so unless someone cuts a check to cover costs (rebranding of the station and maps and “general corporate purposes”) I don’t see this really taking off. What do you think?
