Disney Co. is acquiring Marvel Entertainment for about $4 billion. Both brands are very powerful in their own right but the audiences are drastically different – think High School Musical compared to The Punisher. This deal is interesting to me for many reasons, the biggest is that Marvel has put in tireless work on building the brand and expand the franchise’s outlets (namely being more involved with films) and to what extent that will continue or change is going to be interesting. Another interesting point is the deals the Marvel has in place – namely the Sony deal for Spiderman and how that will carry forth when it is up for renewal. It may end up being a license type business or Disney may want to bring in the monies to be made all in the House of Walt.

All in – this is a smart move for Disney as it widens it reach and the audiences that can be targeted. The benefit to Marvel is yet to be seen (outside of additional capital that will flow into the business)and I am still thinking on it.
